ADVANCED LESSONS FROM THE LORD OF WINE (MATTHEW LOREN)

Some time ago, sommelier Matthew Loren (aka The Lord of Wine) determined that most (if not all) wine courses available to the general public, who might be yearning for some basic knowledge, were either too expensive or to excessive. It was at that time, he formulated the idea for the Advanced Wine Course. A study program for those who wanted to know a little more than the fact that there’s white, red, rose and sparkling wines and less than those who are required to name all 450 AOCs in France (hint: one of them is NOT Alexandria Ocasio Cortez…haha) This is a course designed for those who want to know just enough to be dangerous (in a good way) Recently, I went through the course to see how it stacks up against those that I’ve gone through and to see if the “Lord” has created a program that provides ample learning, is priced appropriately and is easy to navigate. So let’s dive in

The course is delivered in 8 straight forward (somewhat) easy to understand modules. Rather than getting into the minutia, (see, I know cool words) Matthew sticks to the advanced basics. Starting off with some history (Has there always been wine? Can I make wine out of the grapes I buy at the store? etc…) he sets a foundation for learning. He then shows us what determines a good wine from an OK wine and the process by which wine made. Then Matthew covers the area which brings anxiety and stress to all those new to wine, how to speak wine about wine without sounding like a knucklhead (talk the talk with knowledge to back it up) Finally, he wraps things up with an overview of the key terms…and then dun dun dun dun…the Final Test!

Overall, this was a real pleasure to go through, it is well thought out, can be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time and is extremely affordable. But most importantly, it gives you a very solid foundation to speak intelligently about wine and should give you a very good idea if you wish to further your education with WSET, The Wine Scholar Guild…or even the Master Court of Sommeliers if you’re so inclined.
